The Gin Game is D. L. Coburn’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play about an elderly man and woman, both residents of a nursing home, whose gin rummy games bring out the best and the worst in both of them.
Weller Martin and Fonsia Dorsey meet on the porch of their nursing home and strike up a friendship, with Weller teaching Fonsia how to play gin rummy. As they play, they share stories about the lives they led in the outside world. They play repeated games of gin as they slowly come to grips with what is left of their lives in their old age.

The original Broadway play was directed by Mike Nichols and starred the married couple Hume Cronyn & Jessica Tandy, who were succeeded in the original Broadway run by E. G. Marshall & then Maureen Stapleton. Later productions would star Charles Durning & Julie Harris, Dick Van Dyke & Mary Tyler Moore, and James Earl Jones & Cicely Tyson
